Whether you are a CEO, Director, Program Manager, Team Leader, Doctor, Coach, or Educator, your role as a high-visibility leader is to convey information in a way that creates clear, actionable next steps for your team. Frustration often arises when tasks are not completed correctly or on time. If this resonates with you, I want to share insights that can help alleviate this challenge.

Information should not just be heard; it must be understood. As a leader, it is your responsibility to make communication clear and digestible so that your team comprehends how their tasks connect to their work and align with your collective goals. Effective facilitation empowers your team to take ownership, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully.

Facilitation Is Collaboration

Facilitation goes beyond merely sharing information or assigning tasks. It is about fostering collaboration and ensuring mutual understanding.

I learned this lesson firsthand during college when I became president of the second-largest organization on campus: the Black Student Union (BSU). At the time, I felt confident in my ability to lead, but in hindsight, I was a leader by title, not by skill. Most of my board members were either new to BSU or had never been part of a student organization. Despite this, I operated under the belief that I needed to make all the decisions because I had the most experience and the clearest vision. I let others share their thoughts, but ultimately, I relied on my knowledge and authority to steer the team.

This approach led to frequent missteps and frustration. I would assign tasks for events I felt were important, but my team often missed critical steps, didn’t seek clarification, or failed to complete the tasks altogether. The root cause of these issues was a lack of collaboration. By dictating tasks rather than co-creating them, I unintentionally created a disconnect. Without a clear, shared roadmap, my team struggled to execute effectively.

Shift Your Mindset

To improve team execution, you must shift from controlling task creation to collaborating on it. Collaboration fosters ownership and allows team members to bring their unique expertise to the table. This approach also creates space for actionable insights, empowering your team to take effective action.

If you’re thinking, I already give clear directions, but my team still falls short, I challenge you to reflect on how often you seek their input. Are you tapping into the perspectives of those who will be executing the tasks? Your team members are experts in their own right. Including their insights can bridge the gap between intention and execution.

Your Growth Opportunity

Challenge yourself to include your team’s thoughts and perspectives when assigning tasks or deciding how they should be executed. Yes, you are the leader, and there will be times when quick decisions are necessary. However, when the opportunity arises, prioritize collaboration over control because your team are experts just like you.

By focusing on empowerment rather than authority, you’ll start to see better results. Your team will show up for you in ways they haven’t before. Collaborative facilitation ensures actionable insights, clear direction, and effective next steps. This shift not only enhances your team’s performance but also strengthens trust and alignment.

Final Thought

Remember, the goal of facilitation is to empower your team to succeed. When you prioritize understanding, collaboration, and shared ownership, you create a foundation for achieving your collective goals—and you grow as a high-visible leader in the process.
